Commuter Transportation
The majority of trips within the City of Toronto are less than 10km in length, creating a significant opportunity for mode shifting to walking and cycling. In the Trip Analysis by Mode and Distance, the Low Carbon Scenario in 2050 includes a significant increase in short trips by active transportation (walking and cycling) in comparison with the BAP in 2050, as a result of 75% of trips between 1 and 5 km shifting to active transportation.
The spatial analysis of Home Based Vehicle Kilometers per Capita illustrates an expansion of the area with lower VKT around the downtown core; this is as a result of shifts to active modes, congestion charges and enhanced transit.
